Round one of the Australian Open is in the books.
Players take to the courts again today for a second round of competition.
Sportsbooks weigh in with odds on which competitors will emerge victorious and advance to round three.
Australian Open round one recap
The Australian Open kicked off Monday, Feb. 8 – three weeks later than originally scheduled. This was far from the only change brought on by the coronavirus, though.
In order to reduce the number of people in the stadium, line judges were replaced with electronic ball-tracking cameras for the first time ever.
However, the tournament will allow fans. The Australian Open is allowing up to 30,000 fans for the first eight days, and 25,000 from the quarterfinals on.
A number of big names took to the courts Monday and came out swinging, making strong opening statements.
After two first-round exits in 2020, Serena Williams won her first match yesterday in her head-turning, Flo-Jo inspired wardrobe. Williams maintains her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title pursuit after her first round win against Laura Siegemund.
Similarly, sister Venus Williams progressed past the first round with a hard-fought win against Kirsten Flipkens.
Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka and 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu all secured first round wins as well.
On the men’s side, defending champion Novak Djokovic sailed through the first round, proving his title as history’s greatest Australian Open champion.
Nadal and Tsitsipas also cruised through their opening rounds.
How do sportsbooks view the second round matchups?
Round Two predictions
The second round of competition opens with 64 players.
Some of the women’s matches to watch out for today include:
- Serena Williams (-1430) vs Nina Stojanovic (+900)
- Iga Swiatek (-420) vs Camila Giorgi (+310)
- Naomi Osaka (-1000) vs Carolina Garcia (+650)
Sportsbooks expect Serena to come out guns blazing as she looks to match Margaret Court’s winning record and win her first major title since 2017.
Simona Halep is predicted to blow through her second Grand Slam opponent, Ajla Tomljanovic.
While today’s matchup should prove to be more of a challenge than her quick win against Lizette Cabrera, No. 2 seeded Halep will likely move on to round three with ease.
When it comes to the men, eight-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic (-5000) defends his title against American Frances Tiafoe (+1800) during today’s second round of play.
