Latest Georgia Casino Bills Proposes Three Gaming Properties

Georgia lawmakers have once again introduced legislation to expand legal gambling in the state.

This time, an increased need for state funding along with three casino resort proposals could offer the perfect combination for legalization.

Legislators again pushing for GA casinos

Positioning these properties along Georgia’s major interstates is paramount to maximizing revenue and bringing in tourists.

Georgia’s new proposed plans give state legislators the perfect opportunity to funnel gambling revenue back into the state.

Proponents see legalized gambling expansion as an ideal thoroughfare for reducing the state’s economic burdens.

Since the onset of COVID-19, Georgia has faced a pressing demand for new jobs and increased tax revenue.

Casino construction and operation would provide thousands of new employment opportunities and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of economic infrastructure for the area.

In addition, HR30 stipulates that a portion of casino proceeds would go to benefit tuition and grant programs, including the HOPE Scholarship, at colleges statewide.

Georgia’s state lottery, established in 1992, cannot keep pace with the growing demand for scholarships. This has led to the need for augmented revenue, strengthening the case for legalizing casinos.

Casinos need voter referendum to pass

Along with increased support from legislators, polls have shown strong endorsement for legalized gambling among the public.

This is a promising sign since the decision will ultimately be left up to Georgia residents.

A two-thirds majority of the Georgia House and Senate would initially have to vote to approve the constitutional change. Then, it would move on to a statewide vote next November.

Voters must first approve the constitutional amendment, then a second local vote is required in the county of each proposed casino build.

The same process was required a decade ago when jurisdictions voted to permit Sunday alcohol sales.

City councils in Columbus, Midway, and Lavonia already endorse resort casinos in their area.

Now, it is up to Georgia legislators and the general public to do the same.
