Is PointsBet legal in Tennessee?

The road to having legal sports betting in the Volunteer State was a long one.
It began in Jan. 2019 when the Sports Gaming Act was first filed. The bill passed into law in May 2019 when Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee returned it sans his signature, but without vetoing it. By late 2019 the 10-person Sports Betting Council was formed, but it wasn’t until Sept. 2020 that the Tennessee Education Lottery Commission approved the initial three sportsbook operators to go live in the state. And then, at last, on Nov. 1, 2020 sports betting launched in Tennessee.
There are a couple of forms of sports betting that are illegal in the state and they both involve college athletics. Under Tennessee law, it is illegal to have live, in-game wagering for any NCAA events and it also is illegal to have prop bets that are about individual NCAA athletes.

Below that is the featured block. This has all of PointsBet’s featured betting options and is where you can quickly find booster odds, odds for specific sports, or futures odds.
PointsBet has a small block below its featured one. This is where you are able to download the app.
Next is the sports A-Z block. This lists sports in alphabetical order. It’s a quick way to find any of the sports you’re looking for.
PointsBet offers a trio of odds displays, allowing you to pick your preferred method. The options are American, decimal, or fractional. You can also change the language from English to Spanish at the bottom of this sidebar menu.

How could PointsBet Sportsbook improve?
While PointsBet has a lot of great features, there also are a few things that customers might not be so thrilled with. It wasn’t easy, but here are three areas we think PointsBet Sportsbook in Tennessee could improve on:
- Better odds: While PointsBet has tons of great features, their odds are not the best. During Week 7 of the NFL season we compared the odds for PointsBet, DraftKings, FanDuel, FOX Bet and BetMGM. While PointsBet was competitive with the others they only tied for the best moneyline odds for two games. All the other sportsbooks had at least four instances of being alone or tied for the best. Again, PointsBet wasn’t that far off of the others, but a little bit can add up to a lot over time.
- Ability to change app color settings: While a lot of people might like the dark red and black look that the PointsBet Sportsbook app and website have, it can also be a little too dark for some out there. Simply allowing users to decide between a dark display and a brighter one would be a welcome addition.
- Fewer betting options: While we can’t believe we’re saying this, PointsBet online sportsbook can at times feel like there too many betting options. From cross-teams runs options in baseball (in which you multiple the runs scored by both teams) to total goal minutes in soccer (where you add up the minutes the goals were scored), it can be overwhelming, especially for those new to sports betting. At the very least we’d like to see a feature where you can completely turn of PointsBetting on your app if you know that it’s not for you.

Nashville SC played its first two MLS games on Feb. 29 and March 8, 2020, before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team then had to withdraw from the MLS is Back Tournament when it had multiple players test positive for COVID. There are markets available for all teams and all divisions.
As for player futures, PointsBet online Sportsbook has odds for who will be win the MVP, Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. You also can bet on which player will finished with the most rushing yards, passing yards and receiving yards. On the player and coach side of things you can wager on regular season MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year. Quite simply the NBA futures market on the PointsBet Sportsbook app is the best we’ve seen. - Nashville SC/MLS: While the futures markets for the NHL, NFL and NBA at PointsBet are among the best we’ve seen, it joins the growing list of sportsbooks in Tennessee that do not have futures available for Nashville SC or the MLS overall.

You can pick which team you believe is going to win the NCAA men’s basketball national championship at the end of March Madness. You also can bet on the team or teams you believe will reach the Final Four as part of the Big Dance.
It’s a little interesting that PointsBet had 105 teams you could choose from for the national champion winner, but just 51 when it comes to reaching the Final Four.
Sports betting options at PointsBet
PointsBet offers all of the normal betting options, including moneylines, parlays, spreads and totals (over/under).
It offers futures on its site. This allows you to bet on something very specific that will take place in the future. For example, you can bet on who will win the Super Bowl for professional football or college football national championship.
PointsBet has prop betting available at its sportsbook. This allows you to bet on what individual players will do in each game. For example, you can bet on whether Russell Westbrook will score 28 points in a game, or if he will turn in a triple-double. Prop bets are not available for college sports.
Another interesting betting option is the Quick Parlay option. This allows you to see premade parlays instead of making your own. Each leg of the parlay will have to hit for you to win. It also outlines all of the available sports and games or matches so you can quickly make parlays.
PointsBet offers odds boosters on its site. These boost the odds of any given bet. If the Memphis Grizzlies are +110 underdogs against the Golden State Warriors, you may now be able to bet the Grizzlies at +140 odds.
This sportsbook offers a unique betting option known as PointsBetting. The winnings of this type of bet aren’t fixed but depend on the outcome of the bet.
For example, if you bet on the Los Angeles Lakers as 15-point favorites, and they win by 18 points, you win three times your original bet, as they beat the spread by three points. If they win by 10 points, you lose five times your original bet, as they failed to beat the spread by five points. PointsBet sets limits on these types of bets, as they are extremely volatile. There are also differences between sports, as basketball teams are likely to lose or beat the spread by significantly more than baseball or soccer teams.
